Dr. Sajjad Parvin hat seine Dissertation "Enhancing User Engagement in Online Collaborative Communities using Artificial Intelligence" erfolgreich verteidigt.

The thesis addresses a rapidly emerging and high-impact hardware security threat, namely contactless laser-assisted Optical Probing (OP) attacks. These attacks allow an adversary to retrieve internal chip information through the silicon backside using a laser, for example secret keys, memory contents, and intermediate computation states. Unlike many software-driven attacks, OP can reveal sensitive information without requiring interaction with the software running on the device, which makes it both effective and difficult to mitigate using software-only defenses. As integrated circuits become inseparable from modern life, OP poses a growing risk not only to confidentiality but also to system trust. In the worst case, an adversary can use an OP setup to support reverse engineering, enable counterfeit production, and introduce malicious modifications that may later be deployed in safety-critical applications such as autonomous vehicles. Such scenarios can lead to severe and potentially catastrophic consequences.
